Podcasting is fun, free and can make you a star. Don’t believe me? Whole radio stations are dumping their Shock Jocks and going to a Jack (May be a different name in your area) FM format more and more. The days of the ranting idiot collecting money for blabbering on and on are coming to an end in some markets ( Link Here ), so wanna be the next “Voice that people will search to listen to”? Then, read on my friend, help is here.
Now, I know that some will read this and call me a hater, or someone who has no heart, or whatever, but I want to help you be a better podcast host. Honest, I do. So, here are some tips to make you a better podcast host:
1. Be in the moment. Sure, podcasting is like spinning 20 plates, there is too much for 1 brain to focus on, but try to. At the time you are recording, focus on what you are talking about or your interview subject. Your cat, dog, bills, etc, etc shouldn’t matter when you are hosting a podcasting.
2. Don’t spend any time apologizing. Even if you have a rabid group of fans, they are just happy to hear you again, they really don’t care what has happened (Outside of a major issue, then its up to you how you want to address it) to cause your “podfade” or whatever.
3. Don’t meander verbally. It is VERY frustrating listening to you talking about one subject, then meander around to something else, and never loop back. Hosting or Interviewing is an art, and it takes work and practice. Practice = Recording and deleting the bad ones, Editing, etc.
4. Write an Outline. Knowing where your thoughts are going will help you with meandering blabber.
5. DO NOT READ FROM A SCRIPT. Psst, we can tell, and we don’t like it. Hosting is an art, and it takes practice.
6. Please pronounce words correctly. You don’t see the people that correct you every time you say words incorrectly.
7. Um, Uh, Ya Know, Like, etc. These are filler words, and they aren’t worth anything. Listen back to your latest podcast, and see how often you say them. I do, too. So, this is for me. Something I try to do is pausing, instead of saying filler words. It works, sometimes.
8. If you are sick, don’t podcast. If you still do, don;t go on an on about how sick you are. Please.
9. Shorter shows are better. Unless you are the best orator in the world, 20 to 30 minutes is fine, okay? Free tip: Cutting hour shows in half, means more shows over time, and you won’t have to scramble to get a show out on a regular basis. Just sayin’
10. Ask throwaway questions as your first questions in an interview. People are rarely “on” from the first question. You’re not a TV anchor that only has 5 minutes or less, take a bit of time to get the interviewee comfortable. Interviews are like a dance with someone you don’t know. Take your time.
11. What did I forget? Do you have any hot tips? Leave them in the comments. Thanks.
